This painting is on a smooth surface but there is a lot of visual texture in the sky, the trees, and the rocks. Maybe the foreground is a river or lake...maybe another layer of rocks. The viewer can imagine the foreground scene with a distant fire and smoke column. This painting is on a panel and could be displayed without a frame (it's varnished) on a shelf.
