Artist's Description
A swirling smoke column towers above a wildfire in a steep canyon. This image is inspired by photographs I've taken when I work on wildfires. It's a 6x6" painting made with wax paint that is bonded by using a flaming torch--so fitting! This colorful semi-abstract painting will add a pop of color and interest to any wall. It is painted on a 6 x 6 x 3/4" wood panel, but the overall size of the framed art is approximately 7.5 x 7.5 x 1.25". Contact me if you're interested in the original, as it's ready to hang in a black and gold floating frame without glass. The original also has my signature "Opperman" in a thin white script on the lower left of the piece. The price reflects free shipping in the US.
About Tonja Opperman
I love making art, but my day job is wildland firefighting. I fell backwards into fire management after earning a degree in Forestry. Most of the summer, I travel to fire assignments, predicting fire spread and behavior one day or several weeks in advance with the goal of helping managers make good decisions about ongoing wildfires. I've held positions in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana, in Christchurch New Zealand, and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Fire behavior prediction involves fire science, knowing the 'art' of fire, and some computer wizardry. Wildfire can indeed be destructive, but in the natural environment, fire means renewal, regrowth, and a diverse landscape patchwork. My...
